Scalding Water Burns Like Fire
- Tap water can cause a serious burn. It can even kill.
- At 133 degrees:
hot water causes a third-degree burn in 15 seconds.
- At 140 degrees:
hot water causes a third-degree burn in 5 seconds.
- At 149 degrees:
hot water causes a third-degree burn in 2 seconds.
- At 156 degrees:
hot water causes a third-degree burn in 1 second.
Turn down the thermostat on your hot water heater!

Grease Fires
- What to do
- Always leave flaming grease on the stove and cover the pan with a lid. It is extremely dangerous to carry a pan of burning grease. Often the pan becomes too hot to hold and is then dropped, resulting in serious injury.
- If the fire is in your broiler, close the broiler door, and turn off the heat; this will smother the fire.
- Do not throw water or flour into flaming grease; this can cause an explosion.
- If the fire does not go out, call your fire department immediately.
